I have had the opportunity to work with adolescents in school systems, wilderness therapy and residential programs. Often discipline seemed outdated, out-of-touch or an inappropriate match for the behaviors the kids exhibited. A colleague of mine recently sent me a link to a program instated by Lincoln High School in Walla Walla, Washington that actually shifts its focus from behaviors to the student.
Lincoln High School is turning discipline into an opportunity to connect, invest and acknowledge their students. The school is noticing the positive effects of this new program and kids are graduating in higher numbers. When adults treat children with respect, it is amazing how they respond.
