Depression

Individuals are affected by depression every day.  There are many possible causes of depression and it is important to seek support if symptoms persist.  Having a depressed mood can be a normal reaction to certain life events, life changes or life stressors.  Below you will find a list of signs and symptoms of depression:

  • Loss of interest in activities
  • Loss of appetite or overeating
  • Feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness, sadness
  • Irritability
  • Anxiousness, restlessness
  • Increase or decrease in weight
  • Problems concentrating
  • Difficulty making decisions
  • Loss of energy, fatigue
  • Loss of pleasure
  • Cutting
  • Frequent thoughts of death or suicide
  • Sleeping issues

*Specific to Children and Adolescents: Increased anger, hostility, reckless behavior, social isolation, lack of interest in appearance, absences from school, and change in school performance.  There is a strong connection between substance abuse and depression and should be included in the assessment.
